Discovering the Blue Lagoon – A Snorkeller’s Dream on the Akamas Peninsula, Cyprus

The northern coast of the Akamas Peninsula in Cyprus is a haven for snorkelling enthusiasts. Among its many treasures, the Blue Lagoon near Paphos stands out—a large, picturesque bay featuring a small island at its center. Here’s what we discovered on our visit.

Getting There

You have two main options: by car or by boat.

By Car
If you plan to drive, you’ll need a robust 4×4 and some serious off-road driving confidence. From Latsi, head towards the Baths of Aphrodite and continue past the 'Akamas' campsite along an unpaved track. Be warned—this road is clearly marked ‘Dangerous Road’, and for good reason. It’s rough, remote, and definitely not for the faint-hearted.

An alternative driving route begins from Latsi via the village of Neo Chorio, continuing towards Pegeia. The road transitions from tarmac to concrete and eventually to dirt. After 2–3 km, turn right at the sign for Fontana Amorosa. The road winds through scenic hills with stunning views but should be driven with caution. Another 6 km on, turn right again toward Fontana Amorosa. The descent from here is steep in parts—again, a 4×4 is highly recommended. At Fontana Amorosa, follow the coastal track to reach the Blue Lagoon.

By Boat
The easier—and more enjoyable—option is to rent a boat from Latsi. Even a modestly powered boat will get you to the Blue Lagoon in under 30 minutes.

Important Note: If you’re boating to the lagoon, do not attempt to pass between the island and the mainland. A shallow reef lies just beneath the surface and can seriously damage your vessel.

Why Visit?

The Blue Lagoon is a beautifully sheltered bay, with warm waters that can reach up to 30°C in summer. Its sandy bottom creates a dazzling turquoise hue that’s perfect for swimming and snorkelling. You’ll find a variety of fish, shells, and marine life on the sea floor. Be sure to explore the rocky areas around the island and the edges of the bay for the best underwater sights.
